Walloon Lake Fishing

Walloon Lake Trout
Walloon Brown Trout
As one of
Michigan’s cleanest lakes, Walloon Lake hosts a wide variety of game
fish. The steep drop offs carved out by glaciers, and Walloon’s cool
spring fed waters provide an outstanding opportunity for anglers of
all ages and skills. Brown trout, rainbow trout, lake trout,
walleye, smallmouth bass, perch, bluegills, rock bass, and even
smelt are all caught by Walloon Lake anglers. The most sought after
are smallmouth bass, and they are caught trolling, casting, or still
fishing. Rainbow trout are very plentiful and are caught year round.
Still fishing with minnows or trolling with downriggers or planer
boards take the majority of these fish with the occasional brown
trout included. Lake trout stay in the deepest areas of the lake and
are only caught on downriggers in the summer, but are also taken
through the ice either jigging or on a tip-up. Trolling with a
crawler harness takes the majority of walleyes, but casting or still
fishing will also boat a few. Walloon Lake property owners fishing
off their docks will land most species at various times throughout
the season.
Fishing in Walloon Lake has been a joy for Jim Kerr all his life. As
a young boy, countless hours where spent on the dock patiently
watching a bobber until his parents finally let him take the Whaler
out and anchor within sight of the dock. In the early 1980’s Jim was
a USGC licensed Great Lakes Charter Boat Captain during the salmon
heydays in Lakes Michigan and Huron. These days, from early May,
throughout the summer and into mid October, early mornings will find
Jim out on Walloon trolling for trout. In the spring and fall the
trout are cruising the cool shallow waters, and Jim pulls Rapala’s
off planner boards. In the summer, trout hold in the 55 degree
thermocline and Jim uses downriggers to troll spoons 35 to 60 feet
deep for rainbows, and 80 to 90 feet deep for lakers.
